The Auckland Premier Women’s competition begins this weekend with two local sides taking part.
Patumahoe has made the jump up after winning the Development competition last year and join regular contenders Manurewa in the top echelon.
Both sides feature numerous Heat and Academy representatives and Counties Manukau Rugby Women’s Academy and Pathways manager Hazel Tubic said the growth in this area will have a significant impact on the Union.
“Club rugby not only supports the growth of the women’s game in the region but also plays a vital role in providing a pathway for our local female athletes to enter our academy system and uncover future Heat stars,” Tubic said.
“The inclusion of Patumahoe, alongside Manurewa, in the premiership will further strengthen and develop our players, with many of our current academy members represented across both teams.
“Maximizing player exposure to top-level club rugby is crucial in bridging the gap between club competition and FPC.”
The Women’s Premier Development kicks off on April 26 with three other local clubs entering teams. “It’s fantastic to have three other Counties Manukau club teams- Papakura, Pukekohe, and Weymouth- participating in the Women’s Premier Development grade,” Tubic said.
“This marks Weymouth’s first full year in the competition, and we’re thrilled to have them on board. Can’t wait to see them in action.”
