Bombay took a significant step towards the McNamara Cup semi-finals with a 37-31 win over Pukekohe at Bombay Domain on Saturday.

The home side led early before the third-ranked Pukekohe outfit claimed the lead.

But Mike Tuiloma’s side dug deep and came home strong to win the match and lift themselves into a share of fourth place.

Patumahoe withstood a hot early start by Manurewa to earn a 39-11 victory at Mountfort Park to secure a home semi-final.

“Always tough playing Rewa especially on sponsors and ladies’ day,” coach Brad Healy said. “They pushed us in the first half and made us play their game, which got our boys a bit frustrated.

“Good messages at halftime and the boys came out and responded straight away.

“Was good to see Siate [prop Siate Taupaki] back on the field after a lengthy lay off with injuries. Great to celebrate his 100th game with a win and to secure a home semi-final.

“Big challenge back at home with Bombay next week as they try to secure that fourth spot.”

Karaka had to work hard early to hold off Ardmore Marist before taking 27-7 win at Karaka Sports Complex to book a home semi-final berth.

“Pretty physical game at times with a lot of movement,” said Karaka coach Craig Hill. “Ardmore Marist scrambled really well and stopped a number of our opportunities.

“We need to improve our ball control and some decisions in certain parts of the field. Teams are stepping up with everyone still a chance of making semis.”

Patumahoe secured a 46-7 win over Manurewa in Bob Chandler Cup Premier 2 competition. Pukekohe upstaged Bombay 41-7 while Karaka beat Ardmore Marist 72-26.

The Sid Marshall Shield broke into a top five and bottom five round this week.
