A stunning Saturday afternoon for running rugby greeted the San Antonio Men's D2 squad as they travelled up the 'parking lot' that is the I35 to Austin to take on the Huns. The Huns coming off a close loss to HURT we're going to be a tough task for San Antonio as they were without some of their experienced heads for the match. A hot start from San Antonio had them camped down in the Huns 22 for the first 10 minutes. The Huns defense was tough to crack and San Antonio were only able to take an early advantage through the boot of five-eight Sam Hartley for a 3-0 lead. The Huns got on the board with a 5 pointer against the run of play in the 11th minute. This spurred the San Antonio support into life on the sideline with a number of old boys and family encouraging the San Antonio squad to get across the chalk for some tries. And halfback Walker Cagle did just that on the 15 minute mark with a neatly taken quick tap from a penalty infringement. The congressman snuck under the posts for a easy 7 points to San Antonio. The Huns then scored another long range try before Harltey calmly slotted another penalty kick to make it 13-12 after 22 minutes. San Antonio had dominated territory but only had a 1 point lead to show for it. That was until a succulent rolling maul from the line out. The San Antonio pack rolled up theirs sleeves and drove 15 meters before Man of the match Jarrod Bueno peeled off and set up Alex Seguin to score between the sticks for 7 more points. The forwards would then make more inroads through the rolling maul shortly before half time. David Phillips crossing to score, then Hartley converted again to make it 27- 12 at the break.
The Huns would start fast after half time with a converted try in the 1st minute. Brian Strenk would be next to score in the 46th minute after some good phase play by the team which concluded with the elusive fullback going across untouched out wide. The Huns continued to be full of running and throwing the ball about and would be rewarded with another try in the 49th minute to trail only by 8. Coach cliff added 3 substitutions on the 50th minute mark and all made big impacts. Junior Davis in only his 2nd outing of the season buried a few would be attempts to run in his proximity. This strong defense lead to more attack for San Antonio and another sub Rafa Mogollan would score a try in the 52nd minute. It would be then the turn of San Antonio's backs to show some razzle dazzle. A penetrative back line move saw blockbuster winger Kai Wilson steaming down the right flank. He was brought down on the 22, but San Antonio's new favorite white line specialist Alex McCarty, quickly scooped the ball from the ruck and found his way over for yet another try to take his season tally to 3. San Antonio really had their foot on the throat now, as the sun beat down on a tiring Huns defense. Pat Fields would finish off a real team effort try in the 60th minute scoring right in the left hand corner for a big lead of 49-24. The ref would then call the game off after the try due to some disagreements with the Huns supporters and Captain.
A large and rowdy number of away supports congratulated the team after the final whistle on what was an ideal day for footy.
Final score 49- 24 (60 minutes)
