As the junior rugby season begins this weekend, the Waitākere Rugby club is highlighting a simple but important message - being part of the team means being involved.

The focus is on creating a strong sense of belonging for young players, with “team” extending beyond the field to include coaches, managers, parents, and supporters. When parents step in (whether helping at training, supporting on game day, or simply being present) it strengthens the environment and improves the experience for all tamariki.

The club is encouraging a shared approach, where responsibility and involvement are spread across the group. This not only builds connection but also creates a more positive and sustainable team culture. Teams like our U10 Wolves continue to demonstrate how strong parent involvement can foster a supportive and enjoyable environment.

Ensuring every whānau feels welcomed and included remains a priority, particularly for those new to junior rugby. The club believes these early experiences play a key role in whether young players stay involved in the sport long term.

There is also a clear reminder that presence matters. Turning up, even in less-than-ideal conditions, helps build resilience, connection, and a sense of community among players and whānau alike.

At its core, the club sees itself as more than just a place to play rugby, it is a community. By working together and staying involved, whānau help create an environment where young players can thrive and continue their journey in the amazing sport that is rugby.

So the experience we create today keeps our young players coming back year after year.
