On a drizzly Southland day the newly merged Tū Kotahi Wahine (M&Ms) took on a newly built up, but well drilled Wakatipu team. The first half started with M&Ms very quickly showing dominance and racking up some points.
The forwards had some very powerful runs, and the backs showed some great ball handling skills as they took opportunities to break the defensive line, with some great chip and chases.
For a team that have had a total of 3 trainings together, there was no sign of red vs green. They were 22 women with a passion for rugby, running it hard for each other!
After a half time talk absent of lollies or oranges (causing many complaints) the ladies hit the field to further solidify their place in the game. This spurt of energy ebbed slightly at about 60 minutes and Wakatipu were able to snatch back 2 converted tries in quick succession.
Arguably, this meant that the scoreboard showed more accurately what a hard fought game both sides were having. M&Ms then finished the game with one final try to end victorious 47-14. Next week will be a home game vs Star, and an opportunity to show that M&Ms mean business!
