Townsville and District Rugby Union (TDRU), in partnership with Rugby Australia and Queensland Rugby Union, is continuing to grow grassroots rugby across the region through the official RA Get Into Rugby Walla Program.
The non-contact Get Into Rugby Walla Program is designed for children aged 4–7 years and serves as the official entry-level format for junior rugby. The program focuses on developing fundamental skills, confidence, teamwork, and game understanding in a safe and fun environment, helping participants transition into junior rugby and beyond.
Townsville Rugby successfully launched the program for the first time in 2025, beginning with a single Friday night centre operating alongside the junior competition at Mike Carney Toyota Park. Following strong community interest and participation, the program is set to expand significantly in 2026.
Thanks to funding support from Queensland Rugby, the Get Into Rugby Walla Program will now extend beyond the Friday night competition model, with plans to deliver sessions through schools, clubs, parks, and community locations throughout Townsville and surrounding regions.
To launch the 2026 season, Townsville Rugby will host a free Get Into Rugby Come & Try event on Friday, May 1, from 4:45pm to 5:30pm at Mike Carney Toyota Park.
The free event is open to children aged 4–7 years and provides families with the opportunity to experience the program firsthand ahead of the upcoming Walla blocks.
The 2026 Friday Night Walla Program will again be held at Mike Carney Toyota Park across two participation blocks:
