In preparation for the highly anticipated Oceania Rugby 7s, a full-day Volunteers Safeguarding Workshop was successfully held at the Solomon Islands Institute of Sports (SINIS) in Honiara. The training, which took place on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, brought together all key volunteers involved in the tournament, including drivers, liaison officers (LOs), the events team, game day staff, and other interested individuals.

Facilitated by Tihrani Uluinakauvadra, Oceania Rugby’s Safeguarding Lead, the workshop emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone participating in the event. Volunteers gained valuable insights into safeguarding best practices, fostering an inclusive and secure atmosphere for players, officials, fans, and the local community.

Tihrani Uluinakauvadra expressed his gratitude to the attendees, saying:

"It was inspiring to see such a strong turnout from our volunteer team, who play a pivotal role in the success of the Oceania 7s. Safeguarding is about creating a culture of care and respect, and I am confident that this group will uphold these values throughout the tournament."

Uluinakauvadra further mentioned that this is the first time in which volunteers for the Oceania 7s were trained on Safeguarding as part of this year’s Safeguarding Legacy program. The legacy program will involve our safeguarding champions conducting Safeguarding awareness session to all participating teams.

In addition to the volunteers, students from the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) School of Tourism and Hospitality Management also participated in the workshop, bringing their energy and enthusiasm to the day’s activities.

Peter Esibaea, Lead for SINU's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, shared his thoughts on the event:

"The opportunity for our students to be involved in this workshop was invaluable. It not only equipped them with essential safeguarding knowledge but also provided insights into the operational aspects of major events like the Oceania 7s. This experience will enhance their professional growth and readiness for future careers in the hospitality and events industry."

Frank Puletua, Oceania Rugby CEO, commended the dedication of the volunteers and the significance of the workshop in his statement:

"The Oceania 7s is more than just a sporting event; it is a celebration of community, teamwork, and inclusivity. Our volunteers are the heart of this tournament, and this workshop equips them with the knowledge and tools to uphold the highest standards of safety and respect. Together, we are setting the stage for a truly memorable and impactful event."

The training day was filled with interactive sessions, discussions, and scenario-based learning tailored to the unique needs of volunteers. It reflects Oceania Rugby’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding and fostering positive legacies in every host nation.

As the countdown to the Oceania Rugby 7s continues, the contribution of these dedicated volunteers ensures that Honiara will deliver a world-class tournament while showcasing the warm hospitality and culture of the Solomon Islands.
