What a way to kick-off the season. The South East Queensland Schoolgirls Super 7s series returned for its second year on Thursday at Bond Pirates Rugby Club.

From the very first whistle on the Gold Coast, it was clear that girls' rugby in this region is going from strength to strength.

When the Super 7s series launched in 2025, six schools answered the call and helped build something truly special. This year, that number has grown to eight schools — a powerful sign that the appetite for competitive schoolgirls rugby in SEQ is very much alive and growing.

More schools means more girls on the field, more families in the stands, and more communities united by the sport they love. Across three age divisions — Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18 — the competition gave players at every stage of their development the chance to shine, compete, and grow alongside their peers.

Hosted at the home of Bond Pirates Rugby Club on the Gold Coast, the venue provided a fantastic backdrop for the day. The club's warm hospitality and well-presented facilities set the perfect stage for what turned out to be an action-packed day of rugby. A huge thank you to everyone at Bond Pirates for welcoming the competition with open arms.

When the dust settled and the scores were tallied, one school stood above the rest: King's Christian College took out Tournament 1 in stunning fashion, claiming victory across all three age groups — Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18. A clean sweep is no small feat. It speaks to the depth of talent across their program, the hard work put in during training, and the culture of the school behind the players. Congratulations to every Kings player, coach, and supporter who was part of this outstanding achievement.

But as brilliant as the results were, the day was about so much more than who won. It was about young women stepping onto a rugby field and backing themselves. It was about schools investing in their female athletes and giving them a stage to perform. It was about parents cheering from the sideline, coaches pouring their passion into the game, and rugby clubs like Bond Pirates opening their doors to the next generation.

The SEQ Schoolgirls Super 7s series exists because of communities like this one — and days like Thursday are a reminder of why it matters.

Tournament 1 is in the books, but the series is just getting started. With more tournaments to come, there's plenty of rugby left to be played and plenty of stories yet to be written. Whether your school took the win or heads into the next round with lessons learned, the best is still ahead.

Catch the girls in action at tournament 2 being hosted at Downlands College in Toowoomba on Tuesday 26th May. You can find the whole season schedule here!

A huge thank you to all the schools, coaches, players, families, volunteers, and Bond Pirates Rugby Club for making Tournament 1 such a memorable day. Here's to the rest of the season!
