The flyhalf position for the Wallabies remains firmly up for grabs as several candidates pressed their claims in 2026.

Coach Joe Schmidt used a host of options in 2025, with several more stepping up ahead of the July test matches.

Ben Donaldson

Donaldson has rocketed back into contention with a brilliant Super Rugby season for the Western Force.

The flyhalf missed the Spring Tour but responded with one of his best seasons at club level to nearly drag the Force into the finals.

His running game is a massive asset and looms as a key figure for the Wallabies in 2026.

Carter Gordon

The returning Rebel Gordon had a strong debut season for the Reds amid his injury struggles.

He managed five appearances in the first 12 rounds but put together an excellent final month to alleviate any injury concerns heading into the Test season.

Gordon was brought straight back into the Wallabies set-up after his return from the NRL and is expected to play big minutes for the Wallabies.

Tom Lynagh

Lynagh is another who has struggled for time with the Reds in 2026.

His bad luck continued, limiting him to just 18 minutes throughout the season as he dealt with a myriad of issues.

The son of Wallabies great Michael will likely need to build his fitness back in club Rugby before pressing his claims for a recall.

Declan Meredith

Meredith is the bolter of the 2026 season following a brilliant year at the Brumbies.

Replacing Noah Lolesio, the fly-half was essential towards the early-season surge, vaulting him into selection talks.

Whilst the second half of the season wasn’t as strong, his rise remains meteoric.

Tane Edmed

Edmed is coming off a frustrating year after finishing 2025 as the Wallabies incumbent.

The rise of Meredith left the ex-Waratah on the outer, starting just one game in 2026.

He was a favourite of Joe Schmidt last year and will be hoping his body of work at Test level can keep him in the squad.

James O’Connor

The experienced member of the group, O’Connor had a dream return to the gold jersey in 2025 after guiding the Wallabies to victory in South Africa.

Since then, success has continued with Leicester, as they won the Premiership Rugby Cup.

O’Connor will be trying to do the double as they prepare for the semi-finals, with a strong performance furthering his push for a recall.

Noah Lolesio

Lolesio has returned to competition in Japan’s second division. following a nasty neck injury against Fiji last July.

He was a standout in the competition, but couldn’t earn promotion after a disappointing defeat in the playoffs.

The disparity in quality competition compared to his rivals will hurt Lolesio, but he remains world-class on his day.
