Bond University's former Queensland U19s lock Fergus Gillan...in a try-scoring mood against Sunnybank

Bond University produced a dominant second-half turnaround to defeat Sunnybank 45-20 in an entertaining Sumo Energy Hospital Cup clash on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Down 10-0 and 20-14 just before half-time, the Bull Sharks came home strongly at Bond University Rugby Club on Saturday for a strong Rugby Spirit Day crowd dressed in white.

Sunnybank made a fast start with winger Netani Volitiviti, after a smart quick lineout play, and flyhalf Liam McNamara, on counter-attack, scoring in the first five minutes.

Bond responded in the eighth minute with lock Fergus Gillan scoring to the left of the posts, followed by a successful conversion from Luke Depiazzi in the windy conditions.

Sunnybank put together some sparkling attacking plays and scored four unconverted tries in the first half.

Gillan crashed over for his second try on the stroke of half-time. Sunnybank held a narrow 20–19 lead at the break after a high-scoring opening 40 minutes of seven tries in all.

Bond controlled the second half, with a more structured and disciplined performance proving decisive. Early second half pressure from Sunnybank was repelled when Dylan Rowe, the core forward for Bond, produced a crucial defensive effort, knocking the ball loose in a try-saving play.

Bond then struck early in the second half through centre Patrick Barlow. Flyhalf Luke Depiazzi added the conversion to put Bond in front for the first time at 26-20.

The home side continued to build pressure through sustained field position with lock Wilson Parata scoring his second shortly after to extend the lead. Depiazzi again converted, giving Bond a 33–20 advantage entering the final quarter of the match.

As Sunnybank attempted to respond, Bond’s defensive line held firm, limiting clear opportunities and forcing errors under pressure. Another try late in the half by Depiazzi extended the margin further to 38–20 with 11 minutes remaining.

Bond continued to control possession and territory in the closing stages of the game, extending their lead with a final try to replacement forward Nikotimo Mateiwai. Depiazzi added the conversion.

Sunnybank made several tactical substitutions in an attempt to regain momentum, with both sides rotating players in the final minutes as the match's tempo slowed.

Bond ultimately closed out the match, securing a 45–20 victory after a high-scoring contest that featured momentum swings in both halves.

The result was built on Bond’s improved second-half structure and defensive discipline, which allowed them to pull away after a tightly contested opening 40 minutes.

Bond captain Rhys Sheriff said the second-half improvement came from simplifying their approach.

“We had to go back to our basic footy and our basic shape. Once we tightened that up we showed why we are a good side," Sheriff said.

He also pointed to the impact of the crowd on Rugby Spirit Day.

“You could hear the energy and names being chanted from the stands. The turnout from the Bond University students was unreal," he said.

Sunnybank captain Joseph Faulalo said his side needed to improve connection and consistency as the season progresses.

“We can either let go or come together, get some back-to-back wins and push back towards the top four,” Faulalo said.
