Rugby Victoria Pathways Sides Set for Huge Interstate Campaigns
Rugby Victoria’s pathway season is shaping up for an exciting year, with multiple boys and girls representative teams preparing to compete at major interstate tournaments and national development events across Australia.
From the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane, Sydney and Junior Super Rugby fixtures around the country, Victorian athletes will have the opportunity to test themselves against some of the nation’s strongest emerging rugby talent while continuing their development in high-performance environments.
ASJRU Championships – VSRU U16 & U18 Schoolgirl 7s, VSRU U18 Schoolboys & Rugby Victoria U17s Boys
Rugby Victoria’s representative pathways will be on full display this July, with the Rugby Vic U17 Boys, VSRU U18 Boys, and VSRU U16 & U18 Girls 7s teams all travelling to the Sunshine Coast to compete at the ASJRU Championships.
The tournament provides one of the premier development opportunities for school-aged rugby players in Australia, allowing Victorian athletes to test themselves against some of the nation’s strongest junior programs.
Across all squads, the focus will be on continuing player development, building combinations, and gaining valuable representative experience in a high-performance environment. Standout performances in the U16 and U18 Girls programs will help players progress towards higher representative honours and national pathway opportunities throughout the year. For the U17 and U18 Boys programs, strong performances at the championships can also lead to selection opportunities into Australian Schools and Australian U18s squads, making the tournament an important step within the national pathway system.
U16 & U18 National Girls XV Invitational
Victoria’s top U16 and U18 female rugby players will take to the national stage this September, competing at the National Girls XV Invitational at Eric Tweedale Stadium, Granville, NSW, on September 19–20.
The tournament provides a valuable opportunity for athletes to represent Victoria against some of Australia’s strongest schoolgirl rugby programs while continuing their development within the Rugby Australia pathway.
Bringing together talented players from across clubs, schools, and regional centres, the Victorian squads will prepare for the event through a high-performance environment focused on skill development, teamwork, and representative rugby standards.
As girls rugby continues to grow throughout Victoria, the National Girls XV Invitational offers an exciting platform for players to challenge themselves, showcase their talent, and proudly represent the Big V on the national stage.
U14 Boys – Emerging Reds Cup
The Victorian U14 Boys State Team will travel to Brisbane from September 21–24 to compete in the Emerging Reds Cup, an important development tournament featuring leading junior talent from across Australia.
The tournament provides players with their first taste of interstate representative rugby and offers valuable experience in tournament-style competition, including travel, recovery, preparation, and backing up performances over multiple days.
Preparation for the campaign is already underway, with wider squad sessions scheduled for May 17, May 31, and June 14. These sessions will allow coaches to further identify and develop talent ahead of final squad selection.
Rugby Victoria’s Head of Pathways, Braydon Peterson, said the program is about more than just competition results.
“The U14 program is an important entry point into the representative pathway, we want players to experience the standards, professionalism, and accountability that come with representing Victoria while continuing to enjoy and grow within the game.”
U15 Boys – Next Gen Cup
The Victorian U15 Boys State Team will travel to Merrylands, NSW, for the Next Gen Cup on September 25 – 26, where they will take on strong opposition from NSW in one of Australia’s premier junior rugby development events.
The Next Gen Cup has become a key platform for emerging athletes to showcase their abilities in a highly competitive environment, while also building connections and combinations ahead of future representative opportunities.
Like the U14s, the U15 wider squad will also come together across May 31, and June 14 as preparations ramp up toward the tournament.
The coaching group is focused on creating a competitive environment that encourages athletes to challenge themselves both physically and mentally, while reinforcing the values and identity of Victorian rugby.
Super 16s – Junior Super Rugby
Rugby Victoria’s Super 16s squad will once again compete in Junior Super Rugby, taking on traditional powerhouse unions including NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, and the ACT across a demanding four-match schedule.
The Super 16s fixtures are scheduled for:
- September 19
- September 29
- October 3
- October 6
The program represents the highest level of junior representative rugby within the Rugby Victoria pathway and provides athletes with exposure to elite-level standards, preparation, and competition.
Facing some of the strongest junior programs in Australia, the Super 16s campaign is expected to be a significant challenge and opportunity for Victorian players to continue pushing their development. The competition also provides an important talent identification opportunity, with strong performances potentially leading to selection into the Australia U16s program.
Head of Pathways at Rugby Victoria, Braydon Peterson, said all three programs play a vital role in building the future of rugby in the state.
“These programs are designed to give players meaningful experiences against top-quality opposition while helping them grow as athletes and individuals. Whether it’s the U14s experiencing interstate rugby for the first time, the U15s competing at the Next Gen Cup, or the Super 16s taking on Australia’s strongest pathways programs, every athlete involved has an opportunity to represent Victoria with pride and continue their development journey.”
With preparations now underway across all age groups, Rugby Victoria is looking forward to a huge representative season and another exciting chapter for the state’s emerging talent.
