It is with great sadness that WRFU announces the passing of Joe Pope ONZM. Joe passed away last Thursday (Feb 13) aged 83.
Joe was a charismatic figure and a significant contributor at all levels of the game. His dedication and passion were unwavering, and his impact on the sport he dearly loved was truly remarkable.
His contributions to Wellington Rugby are immeasurable, with an involvement spanning more than 50 years. Joe was first elected as a director of the Wellington Rugby Football Union in 1999 and was appointed chairman in 2003, following four years as chairman of the Hurricanes franchise. He served in this role until 2009.
Following his playing career, he remained deeply involved in the game through administration, governance, and sponsorship. As chief executive of ENZA, its brand Fresh Up sponsored the New Zealand Sevens in the 1980s and 1990s and was also the sponsor of the Wellington NPC side from 1985 to 1986, a period in which the team won 19 of its 20 matches.
Joe also played a vital role at the national level. As a director of All Black Promotions, he co-signed the initial professional contracts negotiated by Jock Hobbs in 1996. He later served as chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union Appointments Committee, holding the role for three years.
Joe’s legacy and impact on the game will not be forgotten.
A service to celebrate the life of Joe will take place at Old St Pauls, 34 Mulgrave St, Wellington on Monday 24th February at 11:00am.
Rest in peace Joe.
