The ACT Brumbies have held their nerve to secure a tense 21-14 victory over archrivals NSW Waratahs at Allianz Stadium, securing a finals berth and celebrating Allan Alaalatoa’s 150th Super Rugby appearance in style.
Coming off a bye and eager to atone for a loss to the Sydneysiders earlier in the year, the men from the capital delivered a performance built on defensive steel and pure, unadulterated effort and energy. From the opening whistle, the contest was played at a frantic pace. Kadin Pritchard sparked the visitors early with a slicing run through the defensive line, only to be dragged down and held up over the line by a covering Jack Bowen.
Despite a mountain of possession and wave after wave of physical attacking phases, the Waratahs were repeatedly turned away. A desperate pilfer from Pritchard eventually broke the siege and shifted the tide.
Against the run of play, the Brumbies showed their ruthless edge.
A rapid counterattack put the visitors camped on the Waratahs' try line. Scrum-half Ryan Lonergan identified the space, firing a surgical cut-out pass to hooker Billy Pollard, who skipped through the defence to draw first blood.
As the Waratahs continued to press, ill-discipline began to hamper their efforts. When Charlie Gamble was sent to the sin bin for playing the ball on the ground, the Brumbies immediately capitalised on the numerical advantage. Towering lock Cadeyrn Neville crashed under the posts, giving his side a 14-0 lead heading into the sheds.
There was a sense of inevitability about Alaalatoa’s moment early in the second half. Probing both sides of the pitch and bashing their way into the 22, the Brumbies built immense pressure. A quick tap and go from Lonergan kept the defence backpedalling, laying the platform for the veteran prop to power his way over the line. Celebrating his milestone match, Alaalatoa registered his 13th career try to give the Brumbies a commanding 21-0 advantage.
The Waratahs, however, refused to fade quietly. A lineout in the 63rd minute sparked a drive toward the Brumbies' line, culminating in a try from Isaac Kailea.
Moments later, the game was blown wide open. Following an unfortunate injury to hooker Ioane Moananu, the Waratahs launched a scrappy attack from a scrum. The ball found Max Jorgensen, who slipped down the wing to cross the line. Sid Harvey slotted the extras, narrowing the deficit to just seven points and setting up a grandstand finish.
Tension gripped Allianz Stadium as the Waratahs mounted a late assault. Both sides traded late jabs but as the clock ticked down it was the Brumbies who had the final say as they secured possession in the dying moments. Wright thumped the ball into row Z of the stands to seal the hard-fought victory. Brumbies win 21-14.
