PBC Alleygators' James Keary has been named Gold Coast District Rugby Union's Coach of the Year, capping off a remarkable 2025 season that saw him lead his Under-13s team on an unforgettable journey.

Keary's award comes after guiding his Alleygators squad to the grand final in one of community rugby's greatest turnaround stories.

After suffering heavy defeats early in the season, including a 104-0 loss to Nerang, Keary's unwavering positivity and coaching nous transformed the team into genuine contenders, falling just eight points short in the grand final against the same opponent.

"After losing to Nerang 104-0 and 72-7, he remained positive and gave the kids confidence to make the grand final," said Steven Bruhl in his nomination. "He's a great club man for the PBC Alleygators." The award follows Keary's seventh year coaching the group, having watched many of these boys grow through the junior ranks. His dedication extends beyond Saturday mornings, with countless hours spent planning training sessions, developing skills, and fostering team unity.

"He is the best coach our kids have ever had in any sport," wrote Renee Harrison.

"His heart and soul is in it and he lives and breathes rugby. The confidence and skill I have seen increase in the players over the years is incredible."

Keary also served as co-coach for the Under-12 Cyclones this season, adding to his growing coaching credentials that include Level 2 coaching certification.

A common theme in the staggering 18 nominations Keary received was his consistent focus on character development. Multiple parents highlighted his patience, integrity, and commitment to sportsmanship above winning at all costs.

"He is most interested in the boys' well-being and enjoyment of the game rather than a win at all costs," noted Alle Davidson.

"He has championed clear sportsmanship and care for others."

Congratulations to James and thankyou for your outstanding contribution to Gold Coast rugby.
