Young outside back Sid Harvey has extended his contract with the NSW Waratahs until the end of 2028.

Harvey, 20, currently leads the Swyftx Super Rugby Pacific Rookie of the Year rankings after his breakout season, making his debut off the bench against the Hurricanes in Round 4.

After scoring his first try for the Waratahs in last weekend’s defeat to the Chiefs in Hamilton, the Narrabri-born talent was delighted to put pen to paper on a new deal with the club.

“It feels really special to sign on here. The Waratahs is somewhere I've always wanted to be,” Harvey said.

“I’m lucky to be in a position that I can decide where I want to go and choose to stay in Sydney, with my family and friends. I’ve got two sisters in Sydney and about 20 or 30 cousins around the city, while another sister is coming down next year.

“The Waratahs is the team I've grown up watching and loving. We’ve got something building here and it’s a great group of boys and coaching staff to be around.”

Born in Narrabri, which is a small town in the North West slopes of New South Wales, 500km away from Sydney, Sid Harvey's rise to the Waratahs squad has been meteoric.

Having attended Narrabri High School, with former alumni such as Wallabies Chris Latham, Scott Gourley and Michael Brial, Harvey's first love was cricket and he represented Country NSW as an all-rounder at the under-17s national cricket championships. During the coronavirus pandemic, he even had a Zoom call with Nathan Lyon around the off-spinner's journey from country NSW to representing Australia.

Harvey combined his cricket with his rugby and had his first break in the latter when he was selected for the NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association under-18s in 2023 for North Wests, where he won player of the tournament.

Harvey was spotted by the Waratahs and also won his first call up to the Australian Youth Sevens ahead of the Global Youth Sevens in December 2023.

2025 was a breakthrough year for the outside back. After a season with the Australian Sevens team, where he scored the match-winning try against Fiji in the bronze medal match in Hong Kong, the winger was inspired in the Waratahs Super Rugby Aus title-winning campaign, playing every match from the start.

After making his Super Rugby Pacific debut in Round 4 this year, the 20-year-old has gone from strength to strength, making his first start in the next round, a 26-17 loss to the Reds at Suncorp Stadium. Harvey was then shifted to full-back from wing in Round 6 against the Blues at Allianz Stadium and made a significant impact, carrying 166m and beating six defenders.

He continued his form in the milestone 30-28 win against the Brumbies at GIO Stadium in Round 7, our first win in Canberra for eight years, kicking six from six goals including the match-winning effort. In fact, Harvey is 100% from the tee (12/12) since his first start in Round 6.

Head coach Dan McKellar was pleased to see Harvey commit his immediate future to the club.

“We’re really happy that Sid has signed a new deal here at the Waratahs,” McKellar said.

“Sid is a good young man with a bright future. He works hard on his game and is developing as a player all the time, but he’s also aware of how much learning he still has to do.

"He’s been excellent since coming back from playing sevens last year, which was his first taste of a professional environment, while he was one of our best in the Super Rugby Aus competition towards the end of the year.

“Sid continues to take every opportunity that he's been presented with.”
