Well, what a couple of weeks of Rugby Union and there is more to come.
The World Cup started on the 9th of September and a few upsets have occurred already.
On the Gold Coast on the 9th of September we saw the Grand Finals for GCDRU Juniors in Under 12, 13’s and U16’s.
These matches were of high calibre in which the spectators watched three excellent matches of rugby played at Coomera Rugby Union Club in great conditions for running rugby.
Spectators were kept on edge as each of these matches saw teams battle it out and gave it their all.
In the Under 12 match between Surfers Paradise vs Bond Pirates Rugby, we saw an entertaining and free flowing match. Both teams chanced their arm and at every opportunity moved the ball quickly to give their individual backlines some room to move and challenge the opposition.
Final Score was Surfers Paradise Rugby Club 17 to Bond Pirates 5
The Under 13 match saw Helensvale Hogs take on Coomera Crushers Rugby Club. A game in which neither team gave up till the final whistle. Some entertaining rugby in which several players showed excellent touches and good hand eye coordination with slick passing and good skills in the clean out.
Final score saw Helensvale Hogs 22 overcome Coomera Crushers Rugby Club 12.
In the Under 16’s match between Gold Coast Eagles and Helensvale Hogs, spectators witnessed two very well drilled and skilled teams battle each other.
It was a very close match with Eagles taking their opportunities with individual brilliance and teamwork being the winner on the day. It was a match that went to wire with Helensvale having the opportunity to score late in the match to win, only to be denied by the Eagles strong defence.
Final score was Gold Coast Eagles 20 defeating Helensvale 18.
Next up we had the 7’s competitions, with the ladies in the Junior Girls 7’s State Cup in Under 15 and Under 17 age groups in Brisbane.
This was held on Friday 22nd September and Saturday 23rd September.
The Under 15s finished 3rd after a very tight loss in the semi-final to Brisbane Juniors. Standouts included Nylah Goble-Lote, TJ Murray, and Hannah Clifton.
The Under 17s finished 4th after a valiant effort with only 8 girls. The ladies suffered a head knock in the second pool match and another in the semi final. Standouts included Fa’agase Tupuola-Palale and Brianna Toopi.
Well done to the whole playing group, coaches, and management. .
The representative action continued with the the Queensland Country fixtures which began on Monday 18th September at Ballymore, with our Under 16 Boys, followed by the Colts (Under 19’s), Under 13’s Girls and Under 14 Girls and Boys. Under 16 Girls Queensland Country Heelers and Orchids.
The Australian Rugby Shield kicks off Wednesday, 27 September and goes through to Monday afternoon, 2nd October.
GCDRU have 7 men in the QCRU Heelers and 5 Colts in the QCRU Pups as well as a number of players in the junior ranks.
There has certainly been a lot of Rugby going on around the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the world at present.
