On Sunday, March 22, the ACT Brumbies will host Round 3 of the Next Gen 7s competition at Viking Park, ready to put on a show against the Queensland Reds and NSW Waratahs.
After a gruelling first two rounds on the road, the home side found their rhythm in Sydney, closing out Round 2 with a gritty 26-19 victory over the Waratahs. Now, with the momentum shifting and the home ground advantage, the women from the capital are hunting for more.
As the home side, the Brumbies face an extended challenge, lining up for four matches across the day compared to the standard three for visiting teams.
Head of Women’s Rugby and Pathways, James Erwin, believes the familiar surroundings of Viking Park will provide a massive boost for the squad.
"Being on the road presents its own unique challenges," Erwin said. "Because we’re at home, it gives the players the space to focus on preparing really well for the contest. We’re excited for these home fixtures and playing at a great venue down at Viking Park."
The squad is headlined by the highly anticipated return of Australian Sevens superstars Mackenzie Davis and Ruby Nicholas.
Nicholas’s return is particularly timely, having steered the ship in Round 2, beautifully under pressure in Sydney.
"Ruby played a big role in the last round, keeping the team under control and scoring the deciding try against the Waratahs," Erwin added.
"They are looking forward to seeing her and Mackenzie joining the team again."
With a blend of seasoned AU7s talent and hungry local players, the Brumbies are primed to defend their turf and close out strong.
Fans are encouraged to come on down to Viking Park on Sunday to get behind the team, entry to the tournament is free of charge.
