Counties Manukau Rugby is proud to celebrate the selection of two of its current coaches in the New Zealand Under 85kg coaching group for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

John Afoa, current Counties Manukau NPC Forwards Coach and former All Black, has been named in the national coaching setup. Afoa brings a wealth of international experience and technical expertise to the role, adding significant strength to the touring group.

Joining him is Scott Hooper, whose coaching journey through the Counties Manukau pathway is a testament to his dedication and development. Hooper currently serves as Pukekohe Premier Assistant Coach and in 2025 was Assistant Coach of the Counties Manukau Steelers Development team. He is also a former Head Coach of the Counties Manukau U85kg side and Assistant Coach of the Counties Manukau U18 Men’s team, with a long-standing connection to the U85kg grade.

Paul Wheeler, Counties Manukau Rugby’s Coach Development Manager says “We at CMRFU are extremely proud of both John and Scott in securing these appointments with a New Zealand Rugby National side. John’s playing record and coaching ability through his extensive game knowledge and experience speaks for itself. With Hoops (Scott Hooper), his selection come’s through years of commitment, sacrifice and hard work coaching in the Community Rugby game and he is fully deserving of this opportunity."

A strong advocate for continuous growth, Hooper has completed and gained accreditation in all available World Rugby coaching courses (Levels 1–3), alongside investing personally in further professional development opportunities.

To have two current Counties Manukau coaches involved in a New Zealand touring side is a significant achievement and a proud moment for the union.

We congratulate John and Scott on this outstanding opportunity and look forward to following the team’s journey in Sri Lanka.

John Afoa
