Counties Manukau Rugby’s groundbreaking Y5 Open Grade pilot program kicks off this Saturday at Navigation Homes Stadium with players having the chance to connect with other teams in competition.
The grade will see players compete within their age group rather than based on weight. The current weight limit restrictions in junior rugby create barriers for players who exceed the designated weight limits, limiting their participation and enjoyment of the sport.
Players affected by these restrictions often face mandatory dispensations or are required to play up in higher age groups, which can hinder their development and diminish their overall experience in rugby.
This proposal seeks to explore and implement a solution that fosters full participation, removes unnecessary restrictions, and retains players in the sport by encouraging inclusivity.
“It has been a long time for us, as a Union, since we have had an open weight grade within our junior rugby structure,” explained Community Rugby Champion Trent Rosewarne.
“We are very excited to be able to offer our community an opportunity for our young players to stay and play within their own age grade – regardless of weight.
“Our Year 5 Open Weight Pilot will also go alongside new Game Development Modifications including removing the non-contested scrums & lineouts that result in too much dead ball time - with a purpose to maximise engagement and enjoyment through increased ball in play time.
“We are looking forward to an awesome festival day this Saturday to kick start our new pilot grade and see how it develops and grows over the season.”
