Clark County, WA — Chinook Rugby and the Clark County Chiefs have announced plans to merge, bringing youth, high school, and adult rugby together under a unified organization known as Clark County Rugby Club. The transition will begin during the Spring 2026 season, with the merger expected to be completed by summer 2026.

The new structure is designed to create a clearer pathway for players and families by connecting all levels of rugby within one club. By aligning under a single identity, the organization aims to strengthen long-term player development, support growth across age groups, and build a more connected rugby community throughout Clark County.

During the transition period, registrations, payments, and donations will continue to be processed under Chinook Rugby using the current nonprofit structure. At the same time, branding and public communications will gradually shift to Clark County Rugby Club. Existing team identities will remain unchanged for now: the girls high school program will continue as the Highlanders, the boys high school program as the Wolfpack, and the men’s team as the Clark County Chiefs.

The decision to move away from the Chinook name was made thoughtfully and with deep respect. Chinook Rugby leadership emphasized the club’s gratitude to the Chinook Indian Nation for granting permission to use the name, noting that it has been a meaningful part of the club’s identity and history.

“This wasn’t an easy decision,” said Mathew Ketterer, President of Chinook Rugby. “We were honored to carry the Chinook name, and we remain deeply grateful for the trust that was given to us. This change reflects our desire to grow the game across the entire county and create a unified future for rugby here.”

Both organizations bring strong histories into the merger. Chinook Rugby has focused on youth development and building competitive high school programs, while the Clark County Chiefs, founded in 2015, have built a respected adult program that has earned multiple Pacific Northwest Rugby Division 3 championships. Together, the combined club hopes to build on that foundation while expanding opportunities for players of all ages.

Like many community sports programs, rugby in Clark County was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders say the merger is part of a broader effort to rebuild participation, reconnect players and families, and create new opportunities within the sport. Plans include creating a women’s rugby team and developing U23 men’s and women’s programs to provide pathways for athletes after high school.

The announcement comes alongside another milestone for the sport locally. Clark County Public Parks has constructed a new dedicated rugby field, expected to open in late winter or early spring 2026. The facility will provide a permanent home for the club and reflects the growing presence of rugby in the region.

“Our vision is simple,” Ketterer said. “A field for all. A pathway for life. We want to build a welcoming, multi-generational rugby community rooted in Clark County.”

Community members interested in playing, coaching, volunteering, or supporting the club are encouraged to follow upcoming announcements as the transition moves forward.
